On the first day of college, he dives into the maelstrom of fraternity rush week and emerges with two houses competing for his membership.Īnd so begin the best years of Rusty Cartwright’s life. Rusty – as played by newcomer Jacob Zachar – is one of the most likable characters to come along on any TV show in a very long time. The title of “Greek” refers to the community of fraternities and sororities at fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University in California, where a wide-eyed freshman named Rusty Cartwright has just arrived. Simply put, we wanted to have fun, meet new people, grow up and find ourselves.Īnd if the pursuit of these goals involved joining a fraternity and throwing back far too many tequila shots, then so be it. ![]() ![]() Instead of imparting adult-world lessons such as the advantages of lying, “Greek” focuses on what most of us wanted to get out of college, other than an education, of course. This show comes practically out of nowhere, featuring a cast of largely unknown young actors (with the exception of Spencer Grammer, daughter of Kelsey) and somehow manages to put all the anxiety and mystery of freshman year into loving perspective. Similar to School Daze: High School, but with a bit more challenge, including: Manage your tuition. Now, Sam can continue her “studies” – majoring in feeling sorry for herself with a minor in cynicism. In real life, Sam (Charity Shea) and her friends – who witnessed their pal’s demise and then said they didn’t – would have been expelled since their lies were as transparent as glass.īut in “The Best Years,” Sam was advised by the dean of students herself to sweep the whole thing under the rug. It was an absurd and unrealistic storyline on which to start a series purporting to be about the “best” years of one’s life. The lesson: Don’t tell the truth if it will cost the college a pile of donations and cost you your scholarship. Luckily, though, Sam’s fictional college – Charles University in Boston – offers a curriculum on cover-ups. ![]() On last night’s premiere of the new college drama series “ The Best Years” on The N – one of two new shows about college on TV this summer – poor Samantha Best’s freshman year was nearly ruined on the very first night when one of her new friends got himself killed after getting drunk and accidentally falling off the dorm roof. TALK about getting off on the wrong foot!
